Teisco Checkmate CM-16
The Teisco Del Rey Checkmate CM-16 is a small Japanese solid-state combo amplifier built around 1967–1968 during the golden era of Teisco's export production. Although the front panel was labeled for guitar, bass, and organ, it is best suited today as a low-wattage vintage guitar or recording amplifier rather than a bass amp. Original examples typically feature a single 10-inch speaker, simple controls (Volume, Tone, Tremolo, etc., depending on the production run), tilt-back legs, and approximately 15–20 watts of output.

Tone
The CM-16 produces the distinctive sound associated with many late-1960s Japanese transistor amplifiers:
- Warm, slightly compressed clean tones
- Mid-focused response
- Early, gritty transistor breakup when pushed
- Excellent for garage rock, surf, blues, lo-fi, indie, and vintage recording
It is not designed to compete with larger American tube amplifiers, but its unique character has become increasingly appreciated by players looking for vintage solid-state sounds.
The Checkmate series has become more collectible as interest in vintage Japanese gear has grown. While they are still relatively affordable compared to American and British vintage amplifiers, clean, original examples with original speaker, footswitch (if equipped), manual, or original box command a premium.
